CENTER FOR ARTISTIC ACTIVISM AWARDED GRANT TO PUBLISH CREATIVE ACTIVIST MANUAL

A Blade of Grass to Support CAA’s First Book Project

A Blade of Grass, a New York-based non-profit which supports interdisciplinary arts programming designed to engage communities, recently awarded the Center for Creative Activism a grant to write and publish a manual for creative activists.

In their first book collaboration, CAA co-founders Stephen Duncombe and Steve Lambert will incorporate their decades of experience as activists and their expertise in social movements and socially engaged art. The book will include cultural strategies for activist campaigns and include dozens of interviews with creative activists who constitute the avant-garde of the emerging field of activist art.

The book will complement the skills taught in CAA’s School for Creative Activism, including:

  • Cultural tactics and creative strategies employed effectively by organizers in the past.
  • How to recognize and draw upon the cultural resources and creative talents residing within individuals, organizations, and communities in the present.
  • How to collectively run scenarios and plan campaigns that utilize culture and creativity.

Build a network of organizers and artists using a model of creative organizing more effective in our media-saturated, spectacle-savvy world.

Duncombe and Lambert are thrilled to begin work on the project. “Publishing this book will help us reach even more activists, and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Duncombe. Lambert continued, “We’ve received such enthusiastic interest from all over the world, and I can’t wait to be able to offer this resource to individuals eager to learn more about creative activist practices.”

Further details regarding the book’s publication and distribution will be announced in the coming year. For more information on the School of Artistic Activism and other CAA programs, visit The Center for Artistic Activism.
