Serena Sandweiss

Originally from New Haven, Connecticut, Serena is a fourth-year student pursuing a joint degree in International Relations and Film Studies at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

Deeply interested in the various intersections of media and politics in contemporary society, Serena is currently completing an interdisciplinary undergraduate dissertation researching the historical evolution of the relationship between the Department of Defense and the US film industry and war cinema’s impact on national identity in post-9/11 America.

Besides her academic interest in art and politics, Serena is passionate about democracy, voting rights, and reproductive justice. She has served as a volunteer organizer for several local political campaigns, and orchestrated a write-in campaign at her high school to protest Secretary Betsy DeVos’s proposed changes to Title IX and their negative consequences for sexual assault survivors in 2019.

At St Andrews, Serena pursues her interest in the arts as a fundraising officer for the St Andrews Community Chorus, the university’s largest “town-and-gown” choral society, in which she also sings Soprano.
